A record-breaking crew powers the jubilee 40th SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival

A sporting history record has been set: 40,219 people registered for one of the weekend distances at the 40th SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival. Enabling this huge crowd to enjoy the joy of community running along Budapest’s most beautiful routes requires an almost 1,400-strong backstage team operating like a perfectly synchronized machine. The two-day festival is a highly complex logistical and organizational feat; the figures below offer a peek behind the scenes and show how the event becomes the largest mass-participation sports event in Hungarian history.

The invisible army: a crew the size of a small town

A team of nearly 1,400 people is responsible for runners’ safety, comfort, and support.

500 people build and maintain the course—police, BKK staff, course marshals, and officials together ensure smooth progress.
More than 500 staff supply energy at the refreshment and relay stations.

At race headquarters, a 70-person team directs operations; a 14-person décor crew sets the atmosphere; a 130-person bag-drop team safeguards personal belongings; and 80 colleagues hand out finisher packs. The uplifting finish-line moments are crowned by a 60-strong medal team, while 25 staff ensure seamless hosting for VIP guests and the media.

Safety first: professional medical coverage

Runner safety is paramount. Along the marathon route and at the finish, a 90-person professional medical team—doctors, paramedics, and specialist nurses—is on duty. Two on-site field clinics with beds and first-aid equipment are set up; 10 ambulances are on standby; and 4 motorcycle units continuously patrol the course. In addition, trained staff are present at every refreshment station.

Provision & vibe: 3.5 tonnes of medals and music galore

The scale comes through in the raw numbers. Finishers are greeted by a total of 3.5 tonnes of medals. Over two days, refreshment points distribute 38,000 liters of water, 7,500 liters of isotonic drink, and nearly 1,700 kg of bananas. Temporary infrastructure includes 149 tents providing about 2,500 m² of covered space at the Lágymányosi Campus, plus 300+ portable toilets for participants’ comfort. Festival vibes are guaranteed along the route at 36 music points, spanning almost every genre, with 60+ musicians and DJs keeping runners motivated and helping them push through the tough moments.

Clean and sustainable: caring for the environment

Handling waste is a key mission. MOHU’s waste-compacting vehicle follows the field to collect all litter, and organizers also deploy a dedicated watering/cleaning truck to wash down the areas around refreshment stations, removing any residue and leaving the sites spotlessly clean.
